Kristi Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, DOC
Varietal: 100% Montepulciano
Montepulciano is the second most planted red grape in Italy (after Sangiovese) and should not be confused with Vino Nobile de Montepulciano, a regional name for the Sangiovese-based Tuscan. The Montepulciano grape originated in central Italy and produces a medium-bodied red wine .To be labeled Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC the wine must have a minimum of 85% Montepulciano grapes.
Despite Montepulcianno’s reputation for low-priced juicy “pizza-friendly” red wines, you’ll find Kristi Montepulciano d’Abruzzo offers so much more. First, it’s aged in oak for six months, which creates a subtle richness of flavor. The full-
bodied and fruity struture makes it a gentle and spontaneous wine, with sweet and velvety tannins, great aromatics and perfect from nose to mouth.
Taste Profile: Kristi offers a firm, persistent nose, that is intensely fruity with bilberry, mulberry and plum notes, which are followed by spicy and rich balsamic tones of vanilla and coffee. The ruby-purple hued Kristi exhibits deep black-fruit flavors— boysenberry, blackberry and prune, licorice, and oaky flavors of cocoa, vanilla and mocha.
Pairs with: Kristi’s robust herbal and tobacco-like flavors with rich tannin call for richer and more savory foods. This red will cut through some of the meatiest meats (like beef brisket) and pair nicely with rich, roasted winter vegetables. If you
learn only one tip about pairing with Montepulciano, it is to match it with something with substance (fat). Excellent with rich dishes such as red meats, game and aged cheeses.
